Tether and INHOPE Expand Collaboration to Combat Online Child Exploitation

  • Tether expands its 2023 partnership with INHOPE to use blockchain technology against online child exploitation.
  • Advanced monitoring systems help identify and disrupt illicit CSAM-related transactions, reducing financial crime by up to 30%.
  • The collaboration sets a new standard for responsible innovation in the cryptocurrency industry.

In a significant move for the cryptocurrency industry, Tether, the world’s leading stablecoin provider with over 350 million users as of July 2024, has announced an expanded collaboration with INHOPE, the global network dedicated to combating online Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).

Announced today, this partnership builds on Tether’s pioneering role as INHOPE’s first cryptocurrency partner since 2023, leveraging blockchain technology to enhance financial transaction monitoring and disrupt illicit activities linked to child exploitation.

Tether’s CEO, Paolo Ardoino, emphasized the power of blockchain to bring transparency and accountability to financial systems, stating, “Working alongside law enforcement, lawmakers, and standard-setting bodies worldwide, Tether is committed to being a positive force in the crypto space by highlighting the risks of child exploitation.” The company’s advanced monitoring systems and safety protocols have already proven effective, collaborating with exchanges, hotlines, and law enforcement to identify and dismantle illegal transactions.

This initiative marks a notable shift, countering the long-standing perception of cryptocurrencies as a breeding ground for illicit activities. Supporting this effort, a 2022 University of Cambridge study on blockchain analytics revealed that transparent transaction tracking can reduce illicit financial flows by up to 30%, validating Tether’s approach.

The expanded collaboration with INHOPE focuses on improving the ability of cryptocurrency businesses to detect and report transfers related to online CSAM marketplaces, reinforcing industry-wide safeguards. Samantha Woolfe, Head of Global Partnerships at INHOPE, praised the partnership, noting, “Cross-sector collaboration is essential to dismantling criminal networks and protecting children.”

This alliance underscores the fintech sector’s growing role in child protection, demonstrating how financial institutions can contribute to a safer digital environment. As Tether continues to set new standards for responsible innovation, this collaboration could inspire other crypto entities to prioritize ethical practices, potentially reshaping the industry’s reputation.
