Coinbase Wallet Name Returns as Base App Shifts Toward Trading

  • Coinbase Wallet returns as the product name, reversing the July 2025 Base App rebrand.
  • Trading features include Hyperliquid perpetuals, tokenized stocks and prediction markets, subject to regional restrictions.
  • Robinhood Chain and Monad join supported networks, while users retain control of their private keys.

Coinbase Wallet is returning as the name of Coinbase’s self-custodial app, reversing its July 2025 switch to Base App. The September 10 announcement reflects a stronger focus on trading across multiple blockchain networks.

The change follows a reassessment of social features, messaging and creator tools. Coinbase now positions the product as a gateway to onchain markets, including assets unavailable through its centralized exchange.

Coinbase Wallet targets trading across more networks

Product head Ryan Kass describes the app as a “test kitchen” for new assets and financial products. Hyperliquid-powered perpetual futures provide one example, alongside prediction markets and tokenized stocks.

Coinbase Wallet also supports smaller tokens across compatible networks. Kass says newly minted assets become available by default, while detection systems hide tokens identified as malicious.

New market categories undergo separate product and compliance reviews before appearing in the app. Some features carry geographic restrictions, despite the company’s emphasis on rapid onboarding and access without identity verification.

Users retain control of their private keys under the self-custody model. Coinbase’s website confirms that the wallet gives users control over their crypto, keys and data.

Trading and product fees generate revenue for Coinbase Wallet. The company declined to provide further fee details or disclose whether the trading shift increased user numbers.

Base keeps a role after social features fall short

The original Base App combined trading with social networking, mini-apps, messaging and payments. Brian Armstrong later acknowledged that its social experiment had not delivered the intended results.

In July, Base creator Jesse Pollak handed app leadership to Jordan “Cobie” Fish. Pollak shifted his attention toward the blockchain as the app pursued a less Base-focused direction.

Coinbase Wallet now supports networks including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche. Robinhood Chain and Monad are among the newer additions.

Base continues to feature within the product rather than disappearing with the name change. Kass says trending Base assets will appear alongside assets from other supported networks.
