- Buterin urges exchanges to prioritize security over competition for two years.
- Repeated hacks could bring tougher obligations for exchanges and custodians.
- Ethereum’s roadmap combines AI, cryptographic proofs and specialized Layer 2 applications.
Vitalik Buterin has urged crypto exchanges to prioritize survival over competition during the next two years. Speaking to Moneycontrol in India, Ethereum’s co-founder said major attacks increasingly target user interfaces and centralized infrastructure. His warning places custody safeguards at the center of industry priorities, as companies face mounting pressure to protect customer funds and prevent further breaches.
Vitalik Buterin Urges Exchanges to Strengthen Defenses
Buterin described a defensive approach in which exchanges and custodians focus on securing existing operations. He argued that smart contract security has improved, while surrounding systems remain vulnerable.
Vitalik Buterin also recommended multisignature wallets, which require multiple approvals before funds can move. However, protecting blockchain code alone cannot address weaknesses in employee access or transaction interfaces.
The comments follow the reported $6.3 billion Binance breach on October 29. That incident highlighted risks around infrastructure used to authorize wallet transactions.
He warned that repeated thefts could prompt regulators to impose tougher security obligations, particularly when stolen assets reach North Korean attackers. This was a warning about potential policy changes, rather than an announcement of new requirements.
Vitalik Buterin Outlines AI and Privacy Goals for Ethereum
On Lean Ethereum, he highlighted artificial intelligence, zero-knowledge proofs and formal verification as tools for improving network performance and security. Formal verification checks whether code meets specified mathematical requirements.
Vitalik Buterin expects AI to shorten development timelines while supporting more extensive verification. Faster coding, however, still requires careful testing before software handles user funds.
He also urged Layer 2 developers to offer capabilities beyond basic transaction scaling. High-performance decentralized finance and privacy were priorities, with Lighter and Aztec among his examples.
Enterprise applications could verify healthcare, manufacturing and supply-chain records without exposing sensitive information. These uses would give businesses ways to check records while limiting disclosure.
Tokenized financial products would still require identity checks and restrictions on eligible investors. Buterin argued that blockchain infrastructure could reduce the number of intermediaries able to restrict access to funds.
