XChat Goes Live on X: A New Era of Secure Messaging with Bitcoin-Style Encryption

Elon Musk has once again made waves in the tech and crypto space with the launch of XChat, a new feature on X, announced on June 2, 2025. As reported by Wu Blockchain on X, XChat introduces a suite of privacy-focused tools, including encrypted messaging, disappearing messages, and the ability to send any file type, alongside audio and video calling. Built in Rust and leveraging a “Bitcoin-style” encryption architecture, this rollout marks a significant step toward transforming X into a multi-functional “everything app,” akin to WeChat.

The decision to use Rust, a programming language renowned for its memory safety and performance, ensures XChat’s robustness—crucial for a platform handling sensitive communications. The “Bitcoin-style” encryption likely refers to elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC), similar to Bitcoin’s ECDSA, which secures transactions with smaller, efficient keys compared to traditional methods like RSA.

ECC’s strength lies in its complexity, making it harder to crack with classical computing. However, as quantum computing advances, ECC faces vulnerabilities. A 960-qubit quantum computer could potentially break 160-bit ECC, compared to 2051 qubits needed for 1024-bit RSA, sparking debates about future-proofing XChat’s security.

Musk’s vision for XChat aligns with his broader goal of enhancing user privacy on X, following earlier moves like encrypted DMs for paid users in 2023. The feature’s launch has already sparked community buzz, with posts on X highlighting $XChat tokens and speculation about Musk’s promotional plans. Some users, like Crypto Emre, predict a surge in interest for the $𝕏Chat ticker, emphasizing its branding advantage. However, others urge caution, with Alva noting “wait for audits” sentiment amid the hype.

As XChat rolls out, its ECC-based stack and privacy features position it as a strong contender in secure messaging. Yet, with quantum resistance concerns looming, the cryptographic community is watching closely. Will XChat redefine privacy on social platforms, or will it need to evolve further to stay ahead of emerging threats? Only time will tell.
