Coinbase Clearing Wins CFTC Approval for USDC Derivatives

  • Coinbase Clearing received CFTC approval as a derivatives clearing organization.
  • The authorization covers fully collateralized futures, options, and swaps.
  • Leveraged derivatives will continue using Coinbase’s existing external clearing partners.

Coinbase Clearing has received CFTC approval to operate as a derivatives clearing organization. The approval completes Coinbase’s regulated U.S. derivatives structure across trading, brokerage, and clearing.

Coinbase Clearing can initially process fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps, while leveraged products remain outside its authorization.

Coinbase Clearing Completes Coinbase Regulated Derivatives Stack

According to CFTC lists, Coinbase Clearing gives the exchange direct control over clearing for eligible derivatives. Coinbase Financial Markets operates as its futures commission merchant, while Coinbase Derivatives runs its designated contract market.

Before the approval, Coinbase Derivatives relied on Nodal Clear for clearing services. The new structure allows Coinbase Clearing to handle eligible contracts within its affiliated regulated infrastructure.

Coinbase said the clearinghouse is designed around USDC collateral and continuous settlement. The company said this could support faster product development and more efficient operations.

However, the CFTC authorization remains limited. Coinbase Clearing cannot currently clear leveraged derivatives, meaning margined products will continue using external clearing partners.

Coinbase Clearing Approval Opens Path for New Products

The CFTC registration permits Coinbase Clearing to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures, and swaps. The structure requires the relevant collateral to be fully posted for products cleared through the new entity.

Coinbase has not announced a specific launch date for its first contract under the new clearing arrangement. It also has not confirmed plans to deploy Coinbase Clearing for Hyperliquid’s HIP-3 markets.

Analyst Hans Birringer noted that the approval could eventually give Coinbase the infrastructure needed to support permissioned markets. However, such an expansion remains speculative because the current authorization covers fully collateralized products.

Coinbase also plans to continue using external partners for its margined derivatives business and proposed single-stock perpetuals. Those products remain subject to their own regulatory arrangements.

The approval follows Coinbase’s broader expansion in regulated derivatives. Its new clearing capability now gives the company greater control across the trading, brokerage, and post-trade stages.
