Fairshake PAC plans to spend $30 million opposing former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown in Ohio’s November special election. Brown is challenging Republican Sen. Jon Husted, who was appointed after JD Vance became vice president. Eleanor Terrett said on X that the commitment comes days after senators failed to advance the crypto industry-backed CLARITY Act.
Fairshake PAC Targets Ohio After CLARITY Act Vote Fails
The Fairshake PAC spending represents its largest announced commitment against a candidate during the 2026 cycle. A spokesperson confirmed the $30 million figure and said further spending decisions are expected, according to The New York Times on Monday.
The Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act on September 15. The measure needed 60 votes to clear the procedural hurdle.
The legislation sought a federal framework for digital assets and would divide regulatory responsibilities between the SEC and CFTC. Disputes included presidential ethics, stablecoin rewards, state authority and protections for decentralized software developers.
Fairshake PAC Spending Adds Money to Costly Ohio Contest
Brown previously chaired the Senate Banking Committee and raised concerns about illicit finance and consumer risks involving digital assets. Fairshake PAC also targeted him during his unsuccessful 2024 reelection campaign.
The Ohio contest has already attracted substantial outside spending. Advertising spending and reservations had reached about $298 million by September 18, according to Reuters.
Brown’s campaign had raised $38.6 million, compared with $14.3 million for Husted. Reuters reported recent surveys showing Brown ahead by three to five percentage points.
The Fairshake PAC network supports candidates from both parties based on digital-asset policy positions. Brown’s campaign has criticized outside spending, while Fairshake says it supports candidates aligned with its crypto-policy priorities.
