SEC Crypto Rules Meeting Delayed After Agency Cancels Friday VoteĀ

  • The SEC canceled its August 14 open meeting without setting a new date.
  • Commissioners were expected to consider exemptions for certain crypto offerings.
  • The delay comes as the Senate also pauses action on the CLARITY Act.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has postponed a Friday meeting on SEC crypto rules without announcing a new date. Commissioners were expected to consider a proposal for tailored exemptions covering certain crypto investment contracts. An SEC spokesperson attributed the change to an unforeseen scheduling issue. The agency now lists the August 14 open meeting as canceled.

SEC Crypto Rules Delay Pushes Startup Exemption Vote Back

According to Eleanor Terrett, the canceled meeting was expected to address a proposed offering framework for crypto startups. The SEC crypto rules could reduce some traditional registration requirements for qualifying token issuers and early-stage projects.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins has previously discussed a safe harbor for token sales and a fit-for-purpose startup exemption. The structure could let eligible firms raise limited capital or operate for a fixed period under reduced requirements.

The SEC crypto rules form part of a wider shift in the agency’s digital asset policy under Atkins. The regulator has also been developing an innovation exemption for blockchain-based financial products and other digital asset business models.

Regulation Crypto Agenda Waits as CLARITY Act Stalls

The delay arrives while Congress has also paused work on broader crypto market legislation. The Senate entered its August recess without voting on the CLARITY Act, leaving the market-structure bill for September.

That separation matters since SEC crypto rules and congressional legislation address different parts of the regulatory framework. The SEC can advance agency rulemaking, while Congress can establish statutory market rules.

The postponed SEC crypto rules meeting focused on offering exemptions rather than a final rule. Any proposal would still require further regulatory steps before taking effect.

The SEC has not announced when commissioners will reconsider the item. Its official events page marks the August 14 meeting as canceled, while the SEC crypto rules proposal remains pending.
