Wintermute Broker Dealer Move Brings Crypto Toward Finance

  • Wintermute registered broker dealer subsidiary with SEC and FINRA.
  • The firm plans expansion into stocks, options, commodities, and ETFs.
  • Wintermute targets competition with major Wall Street market makers.

Wintermute has registered its U.S. subsidiary as a broker-dealer with the SEC and FINRA, marking a major step into traditional markets. The Wintermute broker dealer approval allows the firm to provide liquidity for securities exchanges, trade equities, and support exchange-traded products linked to digital assets.

The London-based crypto market maker said the move supports its long-term goal of connecting digital assets with traditional financial infrastructure.

Wintermute Broker Dealer Opens Access to Securities Markets

The new registration allows Wintermute to trade stocks and options from its proprietary account while providing liquidity to U.S. securities exchanges and over-the-counter markets.

The firm can also act as an Authorized Participant for ETFs, including products linked to digital assets. This role allows firms to create and redeem ETF shares, helping maintain prices close to underlying asset values.

Wintermute said the expansion comes as tokenization gains momentum across financial markets. The company has previously explored tokenized gold trading and liquidity services for prediction markets.

Wintermute Targets Wall Street Market Makers

Meanwhile, Wintermute plans to compete with major financial firms such as Jump Trading, Jane Street, and Citadel Securities within three to five years.

The Wintermute broker dealer structure gives the company eligibility to enter regulated securities markets, but additional approvals remain necessary for wider market access.

Wintermute currently facilitates more than $10 billion in average daily trading volume across over 60 centralized and decentralized exchanges. The firm said institutional clients represented a growing share of its trading activity.

The company also plans to expand into tokenized equities as blockchain-based securities gain regulatory attention. Wintermute previously argued that broker-dealers should be able to trade tokenized securities and manage digital assets under existing frameworks.

The firm’s U.S. operations will be based in New York, positioning Wintermute closer to major financial institutions and market infrastructure providers.
