Stellar UNDP Partnership Expands Global Blockchain Payments

  • Stellar UNDP partnership expands blockchain payments through 2027.
  • Pilot programs reduced payment costs and improved operational transparency.
  • UNDP will standardize blockchain payments across future humanitarian initiatives.

Stellar UNDP Partnership has entered a new phase after successful blockchain payment trials across multiple countries. Announced at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference 2026, the expanded collaboration aims to make blockchain payments a standard tool for United Nations Development Programme country offices through 2027. The move reflects growing confidence in blockchain technology for humanitarian and development programs after months of real-world testing.

The partnership, coordinated through UNDP’s Alternative Finance Lab in Istanbul, shifts its focus from pilot programs to broader implementation. Rather than testing isolated use cases, both organizations will develop governance frameworks and operational standards for future deployments.

Stellar UNDP Partnership Builds on Successful Pilot Programs

According to Marco Salzmann’s post on X Stellar UNDP Partnership follows approximately 16 months of research conducted across 17 countries. Live blockchain payment pilots were completed in Haiti, Syria, Kenya, Guatemala, and The Gambia.

Additional payment solutions were also developed for Colombia and Papua New Guinea using the Stellar blockchain. UNDP said the trials produced measurable improvements.

In Aleppo, Syria, payment distribution costs decreased from approximately 10% to around 2%, while every participant successfully received their funds. In Haiti, the blockchain payment system achieved a 100% payment success rate, even when mobile connectivity was unavailable, utilising an offline payment mechanism.

Stellar UNDP Partnership Targets Long-Term Blockchain Adoption

The expanded Stellar UNDP Partnership now focuses on equipping country offices with the operational knowledge needed to deploy blockchain payments at scale. According to Stellar Development Foundation, the goal is not simply to launch additional pilots but to establish repeatable frameworks that can support future humanitarian initiatives.

The organizations believe blockchain payments can improve transparency through on-chain transaction records while reducing operational costs. Stellar said digital payment infrastructure continues to demonstrate value in regions where conventional financial systems remain limited, helping improve financial access for development programs worldwide.
