- Russia crypto trading could reach 4 trillion rubles in its first year.
- Sberbank expects volume to rise toward $87 billion by 2029.
- Retail investors face a 300,000 ruble annual purchase limit.
Russia crypto trading activity could reach about 4 trillion rubles, or $46.4 billion, during the first year of regulated operations, according to Sberbank. The forecast comes before Russiaās new cryptocurrency framework takes effect on September 1. The rules will allow approved intermediaries to provide regulated crypto access for investors.
Sberbank Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov said regulated crypto markets could grow toward 7.5 trillion rubles, or about $87 billion, by 2029, as reported by TASS.Ā The estimates cover organized trading activity and do not represent Russiaās entire crypto transaction market.
Russia Crypto Trading Rules Open Market Access
The new Russia crypto trading framework follows President Vladimir Putinās approval of legislation establishing rules for digital assets. The system will allow brokers, exchanges and other approved platforms to provide crypto services.
Sberbank expects only part of existing crypto activity to move into regulated channels. Popov said current cryptocurrency transactions in Russia total about 50 billion rubles daily.
The rules will place limits on non-qualified investors. Retail users must complete testing and can buy up to 300,000 rubles worth of eligible crypto assets annually through each licensed intermediary.
Qualified investors will receive wider access after completing the required procedures. The available assets will depend on regulatory approvals and intermediary offerings.
Russia Crypto Trading Focuses on BTC ETH and USDT
The initial Russia crypto trading market will focus on Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tetherās USDT. The central bank selected the assets based on market size, trading activity and price history.
Sberbank said it plans to expand its crypto services after the regulations begin. The lender is preparing products linked to crypto trading, custody and digital asset storage.
The bank also plans to introduce loans secured by Bitcoin, Ether and USDT after receiving approval from the central bank. Popov said existing banking products would be adjusted to meet the new requirements.
Existing crypto platforms will have a transition period before full registration requirements apply. Exchanges operating in the country must complete licensing procedures by July 2027.
The Russia crypto trading market will also maintain restrictions on using cryptocurrencies for domestic payments. Digital assets cannot be used to purchase goods and services inside Russia.
However, the framework allows certain cross-border settlements between residents and non-residents. The first year of operations will depend on exchange registrations, investor participation and the final implementation of the rules.
