World Open-Source ProveKit for Private Digital Identity ChecksĀ

  • ProveKit verifies identity claims without revealing the personal information behind them.
  • Proof generation runs locally on standard phones and browsers instead of external servers.
  • World is developing v2 for smaller proofs, lower memory use and better on-chain verification.

World has open-sourced ProveKit, a tool for private digital identity checks on phones and browsers. It lets users prove their age, nationality or ownership of a valid ID. Users do not share the ID or other personal details. World first tested the tool through World ID early access in April.

ProveKit keeps identity proofs on phones and browsers

ProveKit creates zero-knowledge proofs on a phone or browser. A verifier sees whether one claim is true. The ID data stays on the device.

World ID can keep data from NFC passports and ID cards on the device. Governments sign those documents, so apps can check them through secure circuits.

World says neither it nor Tools for Humanity can access the locally stored details.

This local method responds to a current data risk. KrebsOnSecurity reported that Nexus offered more than 153 million driver’s-license scans. The FBI opened an inquiry.

The toolkit aims for 128-bit post-quantum security and needs no trusted setup. World says proofs take seconds on most phones. Its test took under 30 seconds on a low-end device.

Developers can use Noir while World plans on-chain checks

The public code uses an MIT license and supports Noir, Aztec’s Rust-style language for zero-knowledge apps. Developers can add new claims without placing each claim inside an app bundle.

ProveKit v1 is ready for production and focuses on off-chain checks. Servers, computers and phones can verify its proofs. Work on the toolkit lasted about two years.

World is building ProveKit v2 with smaller proofs, less memory use and shorter wait times. The team may add Groth16 for checks on World Chain, Ethereum, Base and Solana.

The release comes while regulators review World’s biometric identity work in several markets, including Kenya and Spain. World says talks with those authorities continue.
