AI Agents Could Trigger a Blockspace Crunch, Says Avalanche CEO

  • AI agents could create persistent demand for limited Layer 1 capacity.
  • Avalanche emphasizes privacy and configurable security for demanding institutional blockchain applications.
  • Smith expects major traditional markets to adopt 24/5 trading by mid-2027.

AI agents could overwhelm available blockspace as automated finance expands, Avalanche Treasury CEO Bart Smith said. AVAX traded near $7.58 after gaining about 3.7%, while investors assessed the network outlook. Smith expects software-driven trades, payments, and position management to create constant onchain demand. He also predicts traditional markets could adopt 24-hour weekday trading by mid-2027.

AI Agents Could Make Layer 1 Capacity a Competitive Divide

Smith told The Block that even low-end adoption forecasts could test assumptions that blockspace is effectively unlimited. Software can transact continuously without sleep, manual approval, or market-session limits.

He gave no transaction estimate or precise date for a blockchain capacity shortfall. The forecast therefore depends on broad financial adoption rather than current network congestion.

As demand rises, Smith expects differences among Avalanche, Solana, Ethereum, and other Layer 1 networks to matter more. Speed, fees, finality, privacy, and configurable security could influence where businesses deploy applications.

AI agents would amplify those tradeoffs by making repeated transactions across markets and time zones.

Avalanche Positions for AI Agents and Continuous Markets

Smith argued Avalanche is particularly suited to business uses requiring privacy and security. Its dedicated Layer 1 environments let institutions configure participation, validators, and operational controls.

The UAEPASS Digital Vault will use Avalanche to verify documents for a platform serving 12.5 million users. Personal contents remain offchain, while cryptographic records confirm file integrity.

Hanwha Investment and Securities also completed a platform supporting Avalanche. South Korea plans to begin its regulated tokenized-securities framework in February 2027.

Avalanche held $2.1 billion in distributed tokenized real-world assets during July. Bridgetower said it placed over $11 billion in production-linked assets on the network using Chainlink infrastructure.

Smith leads Nasdaq-listed Avalanche Treasury, which held about 15 million AVAX at its June debut.

These deployments show institutional interest, but they do not prove Smith’s capacity forecast. AI agents would need sustained use to turn periodic activity into structural congestion.

Smith expects 24/5 trading to require new systems for clearing, collateral, settlement, and risk management. He believes those rails will use blockchains rather than extensions of legacy infrastructure.
