Bank Stablecoin Launch Targets 2027 Digital Payments Market

  • Global banks prepare dollar stablecoin launch for 2027.
  • GENIUS Act creates regulatory path for bank-issued tokens.
  • Institutions target payments, settlement, and digital liquidity.

A bank stablecoin initiative involving 21 global financial institutions is moving forward, with a dollar-denominated token expected in the first half of 2027. The Wall Street Journal report Major participants include Citi, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and UBS. The group plans to use the regulatory framework created by the GENIUS Act.

The project represents a shift from monitoring stablecoins to competing directly in digital asset infrastructure. The unnamed company behind the effort is expected to be established in the second half of 2026.

Bank Stablecoin Plans Align With New Rules

The upcoming bank stablecoin will focus on institutional payments, cross-border transactions, and digital asset settlement. The group plans to expand into additional G7 currencies after launching its initial U.S. dollar token.

The GENIUS Act requires payment stablecoins to maintain 1:1 reserve backing and limits eligible issuers. The framework also prevents issuers from offering yield, pushing competition toward trust, compliance, and payment efficiency.

Several major lenders are already exploring tokenized deposits through separate initiatives. Tokenized deposits represent existing bank liabilities on digital networks, while stablecoins can operate across public blockchain systems.

The consortium includes eight original participants such as Citi, Goldman Sachs, UBS, and Bank of America. New members include Fidelity Investments, WisdomTree, Wells Fargo, BBVA, and other global financial firms.

Bank Stablecoin Push Targets Digital Liquidity

The bank stablecoin effort enters a market currently dominated by non-bank issuers. Companies such as Tether and Circle have built large stablecoin networks, creating a challenge for financial institutions seeking adoption.

Fidelity Investments and WisdomTree already operate their own digital token projects but joined the shared initiative. Their participation suggests banks see network scale as critical for stablecoin growth.

In a recent press release, the group also said it plans compliance with the U.S. GENIUS Act and Europe’s MiCA framework. The dual regulatory approach could help the token serve multiple regions.

Meanwhile, JPMorgan is not part of the consortium and continues developing private blockchain infrastructure through Kinexys and JPM Coin.

The banking group’s stablecoin launch is expected to test whether regulated institutions can compete with established digital asset payment networks.
