Mexico Crypto Mining Raid Finds 300 GPUs at Mountain SiteĀ

  • Authorities seized a crypto mining property in Puebla containing approximately 300 GPUs and eight satellite antennas.
  • Investigators are examining suspected electricity theft and whether the operation helped conceal proceeds from other crimes.
  • Three similar sites surfaced nearby last year, while authorities coordinate further investigations with neighboring states.

Mexican authorities seized a covert crypto mining site in Tlaola, Puebla, discovering approximately 300 graphics processing units. Federal prosecutors, navy personnel and state security officers participated, according to a September 6 government statement.

Investigators are examining whether operators stole electricity and used mined cryptocurrency to conceal illicit proceeds. Reuters reported the investigation on September 12, without establishing who controlled the remote mountain facility.

Crypto Mining Equipment Found Near Hydroelectric Site

Alongside the GPUs, authorities found a transformer, roughly 80 medium-voltage terminals and eight satellite internet antennas. The equipment occupied a building in Puebla’s Sierra Norte region.

According to Reuters, unusually heavy electricity consumption and machinery noise helped draw attention to the operation. Two nearby residents said they could hear the equipment approximately one kilometre away.

Prosecutors are investigating whether the crypto mining facility drew electricity illegally from infrastructure linked to a nearby hydroelectric dam. Authorities have not publicly established the source of its power.

Three similar sites surfaced in the vicinity last year. Local officials are now working with neighbouring states to investigate other possible operations.

Investigators Examine Funding and Suspected Laundering

The crypto mining investigation also concerns the origin of funds supporting the operation and the destination of its earnings. These questions are separate from whether operators committed electricity theft.

Security analyst David Saucedo told Reuters that the facility required technical expertise and substantial financing. He suggested organized crime involvement, but his assessment does not establish a cartel connection.

Earlier blockchain research has examined how illicit actors use mining equipment and mining pools to disguise funds. Those cases do not demonstrate how this crypto mining site handled its proceeds.

Mexico’s federal attorney’s office declined to comment to Reuters, citing the active investigation. Authorities have not publicly identified the cryptocurrency mined at the property.
