Netanyahu Seeks Blockchain Plan for Possible Banking Sanctions

  • Israel’s prime minister says he requested a blockchain contingency plan.
  • No currency, network, implementing agency or deployment timetable was disclosed.
  • The proposal does not establish that nationwide banking sanctions are in force.

Benjamin Netanyahu said he has requested a blockchain plan to help Israel prepare for possible economic sanctions, including banking restrictions. Speaking in an interview broadcast October 23, the Israeli prime minister described the technology as one potential alternative. He did not identify a currency, network, implementing agency, or timetable, leaving the proposal in the early planning stages.

Netanyahu considers blockchain amid banking sanctions fears

During the Channel 10 interview, broadcaster Roy Katz asked whether blockchain could provide an alternative if Israel faced sanctions. The prime minister confirmed that he had already requested a plan.

The comments describe contingency preparations rather than a payment system in operation. They also do not establish that nationwide banking sanctions have been imposed on Israel.

Netanyahu linked the proposal to a broader push for economic and military independence. He argued that the country should prepare for reduced reliance on foreign support and strengthen domestic weapons production.

He also warned that American military assistance would not continue indefinitely. That was his assessment of future support, rather than an announcement of a new U.S. decision ending aid.

The interview came four days before Israel’s October 27 election, placing the remarks within an active domestic political debate. Opposition figures criticized the government’s handling of international relations and the economic risks facing the country.

Netanyahu proposal leaves practical payment questions open

Blockchain networks can provide alternative channels for transferring digital assets, but they do not automatically remove sanctions constraints. Many public networks retain transaction records that investigators can analyze.

Access to exchanges, banking services and willing counterparties would also matter for any proposed system. The interview did not explain how those requirements would be addressed.

The Times of Israel reported criticism from a senior economic official quoted by Channel 12. The unnamed official questioned whether the proposal could achieve its goal and warned that discussing it could damage confidence.

Netanyahu separately said he had allocated an additional 400 billion shekels to defense spending over the coming years. He emphasized expanding Israel’s ability to manufacture ammunition and weapons domestically.
