Strategy’s Bold $2.1B Bitcoin Bet: A Massive Move for Crypto

  • Strategy acquires 22,305 BTC for $2.13B at $95,284 per coin, totaling 709,715 BTC holdings worth $53.92B.
  • Funding includes $294M from subsidiary STRC, amid mixed market reactions including criticism from Peter Schiff.
  • Move reinforces Strategy’s hodl strategy, potentially driving Bitcoin’s long-term institutional adoption.

Bitcoin as a core treasury asset, Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has announced the acquisition of 22,305 BTC for approximately $2.13 billion. The purchase was executed at an average price of $95,284 per Bitcoin, bringing the company’s total holdings to 709,715 BTC. Acquired over time for a cumulative $53.92 billion at an average cost of $75,979 per BTC, Strategy’s Bitcoin stash now represents one of the largest corporate holdings in the cryptocurrency space.

Strategic Financing and the Power of the “Hodl”

This latest buy comes at a pivotal moment for Bitcoin, which has seen its price fluctuate around the $90,000-$95,000 range in early 2026. Strategy’s executive chairman, Michael Saylor, a vocal Bitcoin advocate, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the firm’s “hodl” strategy.

The acquisition was partially funded through Strategy’s subsidiary STRC, which contributed around 3,089 BTC valued at roughly $294 million, with the remainder coming from MSTR operations. This approach highlights Strategy’s innovative use of equity and debt instruments to amass Bitcoin, treating it as a superior store of value compared to traditional fiat currencies.

Polarized Reactions: Market Support vs. Skepticism

Market reactions were mixed. Bitcoin enthusiasts praised the move, with some noting it created weekly highs and eliminated over 22,000 “wholecoiners” from the market. Crypto trader Crypto Chase remarked on X that Strategy consistently drives price surges, while analyst Ragnar highlighted the split between STRC and MSTR contributions.

However, critics like economist Peter Schiff lambasted the purchase, pointing out an immediate 5% drop in Bitcoin’s value post-acquisition, equating to a $100 million paper loss on this batch alone. Schiff argued that Strategy’s five-year leveraged Bitcoin strategy has yielded less than 20% returns, suggesting gold as a better alternative.

The Long-Term Vision for Digital Treasury Assets

Despite the short-term volatility, Strategy’s long-term vision remains intact. By integrating Bitcoin into its balance sheet, the company positions itself as a pioneer in corporate crypto adoption, potentially influencing other firms to follow suit.

Bitcoin’s adoption grows amid regulatory clarity and institutional inflows, Strategy’s aggressive accumulation could pay dividends in a maturing digital asset ecosystem. This purchase not only bolsters Strategy’s portfolio but also signals confidence in Bitcoin’s trajectory toward mainstream financial integration.
