Vitalik Buterin has outlined a new Ethereum roadmap that reorganizes development around consensus, data and execution. The draft replaces the earlier six-phase structure and elevates quantum security, privacy and formal verification.
It also introduces native rollups, gas futures and simpler execution options. Ethereumās base layer targets faster finality and 10,000 transactions per second.
Ethereum Roadmap Moves Quantum Security to the Forefront
The Ethereum roadmap responds to concerns that powerful quantum systems could weaken todayās cryptography. Developers now plan a post-quantum public-key registry, quantum-safe transactions and LeanSPHINCS signatures.
Buterin also points to STARK-based systems and recursive proofs as central tools. Poseidon binary trees replace Verkle trees, while new state types replace state expiry. The plan also deprioritizes VDFs and several planned EVM improvements.
Privacy now receives what Buterin calls āfirst-class attention.ā Proposed tools include keyed nonces, FOCIL elements, lean privacy pools and wormhole architecture. These changes aim to support shielded transfers directly on Ethereumās base layer.
Developers expect the cryptography to resist quantum attacks for centuries. They also target transaction finality within seconds, backed by zero-knowledge proofs. These goals combine faster settlement with stronger safeguards. The design treats privacy and censorship resistance as base-layer requirements, rather than optional application features.
AI Verification and Native Rollups Reshape Ethereum Growth
Meanwhile, the Ethereum roadmap uses native rollups and zkEVMs to raise capacity. Its long-term targets include 10,000 base-layer transactions per second. Layer 2 networks could eventually process 10 million transactions per second.
Gas and blob futures would let major applications reserve network capacity at fixed prices. That model could limit exposure to sudden fee swings during periods of high demand.
Additionally, the Ethereum roadmap gives AI tools a central role in end-to-end formal verification. Buterin argues that protocol complexity now exceeds what people can verify manually. AI systems would test specifications and help identify security failures across the architecture.
The Ethereum Foundationās public strawmap covers seven upgrades through 2029, with releases planned roughly every six months. The draft may also expose leanISA or RISC-V beneath or alongside the EVM. Developers revise it quarterly as research and implementation priorities change.
