Zcash Ironwood Upgrade Launches July 28 With New Privacy Pool

  • Zcash Ironwood Upgrade activates on July 28 at block 3,428,143.
  • The upgrade replaces the Orchard shielded pool with a new private pool.
  • New accounting checks may help detect any counterfeit ZEC created previously.

Zcash Ironwood Upgrade is now scheduled to activate on July 28 at approximately 8:00 a.m. EST, following a one-week delay from its original target. Zcash core developer Sean Bowe confirmed the activation will occur at block height 3,428,143. The Zcash Ironwood Upgrade introduces a new private shielded pool and retires the existing Orchard pool after developers addressed the previously disclosed Infinity vulnerability.

Zcash Ironwood Upgrade Replaces Orchard Shielded Pool

The Zcash Ironwood Upgrade follows the discovery of the Infinity bug in Orchard, the network’s primary shielded transaction pool. Developers stated that the flaw could have theoretically allowed for the creation of counterfeit ZECs, although no evidence has been found that the vulnerability was ever exploited.

Before the issue became public, emergency software updates disabled Orchard transactions temporarily. The NU6.2 hard fork later fixed the vulnerability and restored normal network operations. Ironwood now represents the next phase of the security upgrade.

Shielded Labs previously suggested delaying deployment because exchanges, wallet providers, and mining pools were simultaneously migrating from the legacy Zcashd software to the newer Z3 stack, which includes Zebra, Zaino, and Zallet.

Zcash Ironwood Upgrade Adds New Accounting Verification

A key feature of the Zcash Ironwood Upgrade is the migration process from Orchard into a newly created private pool. Funds leaving Orchard must pass through an accounting checkpoint before entering the new shielded pool.

According to Shielded Labs, this mechanism could reveal whether counterfeit ZEC was ever created through the earlier vulnerability. If any fraudulent coins exist, moving them through the checkpoint could expose their presence, while leaving them behind would prevent future transfers after Orchard closes.
