- Distribution and transaction costs consumed approximately 59% of Circle’s first-half revenue.
- Circle reported $473 million in reinvestment and roughly seven cents of profit per revenue dollar.
- Standard redemptions are free for Circle customers; faster settlement depends on eligibility.
Circle defended USDC economics on October 16, disclosing $819 million in distribution and transaction costs against approximately $1.4 billion in first-half revenue. The company also reported about $473 million in reinvestment.
Chief Commercial Officer Kash Razzaghi presented the figures in response to new issuers questioning how much revenue established stablecoin providers retain and charge for redemptions.
USDC economics reveal distribution and investment costs
In its published breakdown, Circle said distribution and transaction costs consumed approximately 59 cents of each revenue dollar. The disclosure does not separate payments to partners from transaction expenses.
Another 34 cents funded licensing, banking relationships, settlement liquidity, compliance, product development and blockchain integrations. Circle said it retained approximately seven cents per revenue dollar as net profit.
Razzaghi argued that USDC economics must support both distribution incentives and the infrastructure required to maintain reliable service. The post challenged competing business models without naming individual rivals.
Partners earn a share of reserve income based on the balances they attract and maintain. Circle identified Coinbase as its largest distribution partner, citing $20 billion in average second-quarter USDC balances across Coinbase products.
The company also highlighted Binance’s September commercial agreement and $100 million equity investment. More than 150 other partners participate financially in the stablecoin’s growth.
USDC economics underpin free redemption and liquidity
Circle said all its customers can redeem through standard banking channels without fees. Those transfers typically settle within two business days.
Businesses using Circle Payments Network and qualifying platform customers can access free, near-real-time redemptions. Eligibility matters: the announcement does not promise identical settlement speeds for every holder.
To fund rapid redemptions, Circle maintains cash at partner banks rather than investing everything in higher-yielding Treasuries. That trade-off is another component of USDC economics, according to Razzaghi.
The company reported more than $36 trillion in first-half on-chain transaction volume and over $315 billion in combined minting and redemptions. Transfer volume measures token movement, not solely purchases of goods and services.
Circle put USDC’s share of global stablecoin transaction volume at approximately 77% in June, compared with 60% a year earlier.
