Cronos Blockchain Halted After Tectonic Exploit Drains Up to $75 MillionĀ

  • Cronos blockchain halted after an exploit hit Tectonic.
  • Weilin Li estimates the attack drained about $75 million.
  • Around $60 million reportedly remains stranded on Cronos.

The Cronos blockchain halted on August 30 after an exploit hit Tectonic, its largest lending protocol. On-chain researcher Weilin Li estimated losses between $66 million and $75 million. The attack involved a sharp manipulation of Tectonic’s TONIC token before the attacker borrowed other assets.

Cronos validators stopped block production to prevent further asset transfers. Li said only about $6 million reached Ethereum before the halt. Roughly $60 million remained on Cronos, based on his tracking of attacker-controlled addresses.

Cronos Blockchain Halt Follows TONIC Price Manipulation

The Cronos blockchain stopped after Tectonic reported an active security incident. The protocol warned users not to interact with its platform while its team investigated the attack. Tectonic had about $121.7 million locked before the incident, according to DeFiLlama data.

Li said the attacker pushed TONIC’s price roughly 100 times higher within about 20 minutes. The attacker then used the inflated tokens as collateral to borrow more liquid assets from Tectonic.

The method resembles the 2022 Mango Markets attack, where an attacker manipulated the price of a thinly traded token. In both cases, inflated collateral values allowed attackers to borrow assets against positions that carried artificially high valuations.

The Cronos blockchain response prevented most of the reported funds from leaving the network. Li said about $6 million reached Ethereum before validators halted the chain. The remaining funds reportedly stayed on Cronos.

Cronos Blockchain Faces Questions Over Recovery and Control

The Cronos blockchain uses a validator structure that allows coordinated intervention during emergencies. Validators can stop block production, which gives the network a way to restrict asset movement during an active exploit.

That response also raises questions about network control. A chain capable of stopping transactions can potentially prevent attackers from moving funds, but ordinary users also lose access during the halt.

Crypto.com CEO Kris Marszalek said the company’s app and exchange were not affected. He added that Crypto.com’s security team was assisting Tectonic with its investigation.

Tectonic operates independently from Crypto.com, despite its position within the Cronos ecosystem. The protocol launched in 2021 through Cronos Labs and became the largest lending platform on the network.

The Cronos blockchain has not provided a restart timetable. Tectonic also has not confirmed the final loss figure or explained the exact attack path. The next updates will focus on the manipulated TONIC price, the borrowed assets, and the funds still held on Cronos.
