Solana activated Alpenglow on October 21, replacing TowerBFT, the consensus protocol the network has used since it launched in 2020. In a press release, Anza said the transition occurred at slot 459,653,000 around 14:00 UTC. The upgrade targets roughly 150-millisecond transaction finality, potentially shortening settlement waits for payments and exchange deposits. Early dashboard readings had not yet demonstrated sustained performance at that level.
Alpenglow replaces onchain voting with faster certificates
The first rollout phase, Votor, changes how validators agree that transactions are final. It replaces on-chain vote transactions with direct validator messages and aggregated voting certificates.
Solana’s published target falls from roughly 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds, a reduction of about 98.8%. Finality is when transactions become irreversible under consensus rules, not when an application first displays a confirmation.
Early launch coverage cited a dashboard reading of 6.6 seconds. That snapshot does not establish sustained performance or provide a definitive assessment of the upgrade.
Alpenglow also changes how transaction statistics should be interpreted. Removing validator votes from the transaction stream can lower headline counts without indicating that user activity has declined.
Solana’s documentation says transaction execution remains unchanged, including the virtual machine and existing programs. Users do not need to take action for the consensus transition.
Alpenglow rollout follows testing as further upgrades await
Anza first published the design in May 2025. Its preparation included security reviews, adversarial testing and repeated migration rehearsals before deployment.
Galaxy’s testing account reported six testnet resets and an unsuccessful migration that required a rollback. A subsequent migration succeeded, helping operators prepare for the mainnet transition.
Those failures occurred in a testing environment rather than on the live network holding user funds. They illustrate why migration rehearsals formed an important part of the development process.
Alpenglow’s later Rotor phase is intended to replace Turbine’s block propagation system. It would change how block data reaches validators, rather than simply repeating the voting overhaul.
Anza is also researching geographically aware leader rotations and Quantumglow, a design using hash-based signatures for post-quantum security. Those additional changes have no confirmed release dates.
