- PayMe’s 3.3 million users will gain access as stablecoin wallet activation rolls out.
- Initial services cover transfers between users and payments to over 100,000 merchants.
- Mobile banking integration and tokenized fund subscriptions are planned for later this year.
HSBC RedCoin has launched on PayMe, introducing Hong Kong dollar stablecoin payments through an app serving over 3.3 million users. The bank announced the rollout on October 23, with wallet activation becoming available in the coming days. Initial services cover transfers between users and merchant payments, while investment features are planned for later this year.
HSBC RedCoin starts with transfers and merchant payments
The token, identified by the ticker RCHKD, is licensed and regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. Customers will be able to send it instantly to friends and family through PayMe.
The bank says payments will also reach more than 100,000 merchants through the platform. That provides an existing distribution network, although the user count does not establish how many customers will activate wallets.
Before launching HSBC RedCoin, the bank conducted staff pilots involving nearly 100 participants. Testing covered minting, wallet activation and live transfers across the customer journey.
The initial release focuses on familiar payment activities inside an existing app. Its adoption will depend on whether customers find practical benefits beyond their current payment experience.
The launch announcement does not specify the underlying blockchain or confirm transfers to independent external wallets. Those details remain important for assessing how widely the token can circulate beyond bank-operated services.
HSBC RedCoin investment features are planned for later
The bank plans to add stablecoin wallet functionality to its Hong Kong mobile banking app before year-end. Customers would then be able to subscribe to tokenized investment products using HSBC RedCoin.
Planned offerings include a new share class of an existing Hong Kong dollar money market fund. These investment features are future additions, rather than services confirmed available at the initial PayMe rollout.
The launch follows the HKMA’s April 10 decision to grant its first stablecoin issuer licences to HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial. The licensing regime operates under Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance, which took effect in August 2025.Â
Digital assets executive John O’Neill said the bank also intends to expand into corporate and institutional applications. HSBC Digital Assets Custody provides safekeeping services for the token.
