24-Hour Stock Trading Moves Closer With SEC September Roundtable

  • The SEC will examine round-the-clock equity trading on September 17.
  • Nasdaq and Cboe are preparing near-continuous weekday trading schedules.
  • Liquidity, clearing, resilience and investor protection remain central concerns.

SEC announced in a press release it will hold a public roundtable on September 17 to examine 24-hour stock trading in U.S. equity markets. The event will take place at its Washington headquarters and stream online. Chair Paul Atkins said longer sessions could align American equities with continuously traded markets. The discussion will focus on overnight access, market operations, resilience and investor protection.

24-Hour Stock Trading Requires Wider Market Coordination

The shift toward 24-hour stock trading involves more than extending exchange schedules. Market data systems must publish prices for longer periods. Clearing firms must also process transactions beyond the traditional trading day.

Brokers would need continuous order monitoring, customer support and risk controls. SEC Trading and Markets Director Jamie Selway previously identified corporate actions, trade reporting and common protocols as key challenges.

Lower overnight participation may produce thinner liquidity and wider bid-ask spreads. Technical outages could also become harder to manage as maintenance windows shrink. Firms must coordinate halts, corrections, dividends and other corporate events across sessions.

The September meeting will gather views from exchanges, brokers, investors and clearing firms. The SEC has not proposed a final rule or established a common launch date.

Nasdaq and Cboe Advance 24-Hour Stock Trading Plans

Nasdaq expects to introduce a 23-hour weekday schedule during the second half of 2026. The launch still depends on regulatory approval and industry readiness. Its overnight session would run from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. Eastern Time.

Cboe has secured SEC approval for near-continuous trading on its EDGX exchange. It plans to begin in December 2026, depending on infrastructure readiness. The schedule would run from Sunday night through Friday evening, with a daily one-hour operational break.

The London Stock Exchange is also developing LSE 24 as a separate venue. Client testing is planned before the end of 2026. Exchange-traded products could launch during the first half of 2027.
