In a press release, Bitcoin Security Consortium has launched with $15 million in pledges from nine major financial and crypto companies. Strategy, BlackRock, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, ARK Invest, Anchorage Digital, Block, Blockstream, and Galaxy formed the group. Funding will support Bitcoin developers, security researchers, and long-term defenses against quantum computing risks. Members committed the money over three years while retaining control over each allocation.
Bitcoin Security Consortium Uses Independent Funding Model
The Bitcoin Security Consortium will not hold a central fund or choose recipients collectively. Each founding member will independently support selected developers, researchers, or organizations. The structure avoids placing technical influence under one corporate body.
Mike Schmidt, executive director of Bitcoin developer nonprofit Brink, will coordinate daily operations as a volunteer. The Bitcoin Security Consortium also plans to publish updated material about security work for investors, media, and the public.
Members stated that the group will not direct Bitcoin development or endorse protocol changes. It also will not speak for Bitcoin Core contributors. That boundary allows institutional firms to fund open-source work without controlling the network.
BlackRock digital assets head Robert Mitchnick highlighted the critical work completed by developers. Strategy CEO Phong Le also linked the funding to long-term holder interests.
Quantum Threat Pushes Bitcoin Developers Toward Early Action
Quantum computing is the Bitcoin Security Consortiumās first stated research priority. Large-scale quantum machines capable of breaking Bitcoin cryptography do not currently exist. Still, migration planning may require years across wallets, exchanges, custodians, miners, and users.
Bitcoin developers are already reviewing possible defenses. Draft BIP 360 proposes Pay-to-Merkle-Root, an output type without Taprootās vulnerable key-path spend. The design targets long-exposure attacks; however, separate post-quantum signatures may still be necessary.
Coinbase will contribute engineering resources in addition to its financial support. Its work includes BIP 360 and wider migration planning for Bitcoin quantum security. Coinbase also plans developer sessions with Stanford and post-quantum custody upgrades.
Galaxy launched a separate initiative offering up to $5 million for quantum-resistant solutions, migration tools, and security audits. The Bitcoin Security Consortium announcement did not specify whether that commitment forms part of the shared $15 million pledge.
